Allen Hopkins Supports ABP: Sanctioned Event & Promoter of 2012 Super Billiards Expo

From Oscar Dominguez – ABP Board Secretary & Treasurer

Chicago, IL – The ABP has been making strides for the betterment of pool players and promoters alike. The newest development of the ABP and professional pool comes with the full cooperation and support of legendary player and promoter Allen Hopkins with his annual Players 10-Ball Championship. The Super Billiard Expo will celebrate its 20th year in 2012, in a new, larger, and more accommodating facility for players and spectators alike. This will be the first fully sanctioned full ABP ranking points tournament. Allen has fully committed his support to the players by listening to the players’ desires to help make pool better for everyone. By making minor adjustments to rules and length of play, Allen has stepped up to the plate and met the ABP’s requests to make pool a sport of skill.

“It’s like a breath of fresh air finally having a promoter who wants to work with the professional players without any issues or agendas. Allen is a promoter who truly understands the importance of a strong men’s professional association. He wants the players to be able to play by the same rules, format, and have a voice. He is definitely a role model for all other promoters to follow”, said Rodney Morris, Vice President of the ABP.

“I’ve been a player my whole life, so I’m always going to support the players. I’m a promoter, but in my heart a player first. When it comes to prize money, players should always be paid in full and on time. That’s why I support the ABP and what they are trying to do”, said Hopkins. Allen Hopkins is a 40 year veteran of the game and one of the sport’s most successful promoters. Hopkins was recognized for his achievements and inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 2008 in the Greatest Player category.

The ABP has been making strides for the betterment of pool players and promoters alike.

The Super Billiards Expo will be March 8-11, 2012 at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks. It will be the 20th anniversary event, the largest and longest running independently owned expo show in billiards history. The new venue has double the space which allows The Players Championship to expand to 128 players. The Players Championship will use ABP rankings to seed players and follow all ABP Format and Rules to standardize the game. Last year, the SBE had 120 vendor spaces and now it will nearly double with over 200 vendor spaces available. There will be an additional 32 tables in a separate room and they will host daily tournaments for all players with a total of over 200 tables on site hosting the World Artistic Championship and a Pro 3-cushion event.

“The timing is great with the ABP launching alongside our 20th Anniversary of the Super Billiards Expo. With the top ABP pros there, along with the vendors, industry leaders, fans, and amateurs, this will be one of the best billiard extravaganzas we ever hosted”, said Allen Hopkins, Jr., who has been his father’s right hand man in producing the huge show each year.
Allen Hopkins, Sr. adds, “I’m a little anxious about it all because it’s a big move. But we have much more space, double the parking, and a new hotel built for the SBE 2013. I’d like to make this event eventually the major trade show of the billiards industry. There’s huge potential here at the new venue to expand, so, all in all, it’s a very good thing.”

In 2012, the ABP plans to sanction more events and in that regard will be introducing the ABP International Ranking Point System which has been created by ABP associate Joel Pope. The ABP will also be introducing the ABP Rules & Format which it hopes will standardize the sport further. The planned integration will be a process, and the ABP is not expecting an overnight change, and is ready to work with promoters and associations to take time to integrate these needed changes into our sport.

“Allen is a good friend to the tour, and to the professional players. He’s the kind of man and promoter we can always count on”, said Johnny Archer, ABP President.

“The conversation with Allen on sanctioning his event with the ABP took less than 2 minutes. He agreed right away without hesitation. He didn’t ask for any concessions or demands. Allen thinks it’s the right move for the players to make uniform the rules and guidelines. He understood what the ABP is trying to do and he has always believed in the men professionals being together. HeR Read more ...

In Friday’s action in the 14.1 Challenge, Darren Appleton squared off against Niels Fiejen in a first round. The back and forth battle saw some safe exchanges that resulted in Fiejen taking a three foul penalty to fend off the surge of a trailing Appleton. This match was a classic, knock-down, drag-out, fight-for-every-shot match. However, this time fortune did not shine on Appleton so well as Souquet posted a monster run to finish off Appleton. Canadian John Morra defeated Van Boening in a two-set final that kept the crowd mesmerized.

The day started with several dozen players left in the bank pool division of the Derby City Classic. After a few rounds there were three remaining players; John Morra, Brandon Shuff and Shane Van Boening. The draw allowed John Morra, who was undefeated at the time, to advance to the finals while Van Boening and Shuff played for their right to advance. After a hard-fought battle, Van Boening advanced to meet Morra.

The first set of the finals was a display in banking by both players, with Van Boening getting the win. The second set saw a good start from Morra and a mistake by Van Boening that will haunt him for some time. Van Boening called a 4-rail bank but made the shot 2 rails. After he moved several balls to claim victory, his mistake was noticed and he was charged with a loss, giving Morra a 2-0 lead. Van Boening fought back, but Morra persevered to take home the win and the title.

Early Results at Derby City Classic Delivers the Goods

Posted by admin as Billiard News, Players

by Paul Berg

If you missed the live Inside POOL free live HD stream, free lessons aren’t your thing. However, if you were at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino for Friday and Saturday’s action at the 14th Annual Derby City Classic, you missed the chance for many more. Some odd threats of weather conditions made it tough to get from Louisville, KY to Elizabeth, IN at the outset, yet all the animals in the zoo of the wild pocket billiards world are represented, and the hospitality couldn’t be sweeter.

Whether it was the pink 4 ball from the Accustats crew’s view of the Diamond under the hot lights of table one, or an Aramith purple scattered across two luxurious floors with 34 more tournament tables and plenty of legendary signs leading to more secret sections of the jungle, the start to the grueling grind set the cold night on fire in the 9-Ball Banks division. Straight pool has a magical 14.1 brew fermenting, while the firmaments will open to the beasts of One Pocket and rotation’s little brother 9-Ball soon enough. While the sprawling first round of the three jeweled crown of the main events carried on it’s first round on the players’ first barrel of a buy-back structure that allows two chances in each discipline, the great ring game tradition caught the galleries attention.

Scott Frost was the big winner out of six capable bank pool players, and your egotistical narrator mustered up an interview earlier in the night to encapsulate what he was unable to witness first hand. The rail was buzzing after sunrise about their favorite ousting some local sons, as “The Freezer” let go of his defensive mindset after a tough start to the tournament. I caught up to him after a victory on his rebuy that was as impressive to me against the noise as the big dollar score was to the crowd the night before.

scott frost wins derby one pocket Early Results at Derby City Classic Delivers the Goods

Frost was the big winner out of six capable bank players, and your egotistical narrator mustered up an interview earlier in the night to encapsulate what he was unable to witness first hand.

“I was jet-lagged; played my first match against Dennis Orcollo. He beat me 3-0. I had plenty of shots, but that table …” Frost didn’t trail off as we discussed the battle with his manager Larry Schwartz, but the conditions can be explained quickly. The lights for television cause a drying process on the cloth and sweat for birds, dogs and cats of any kind. The pressure is amplified in many ways in a world where the camera is pervasive and the level of scrutiny is intense. “Larry talked me into playing the ring game. I’m late for the ring game, don’t even want to play.” Confidence is a must in this shooting game, but with an opening 2 ball cross side, you get some bang for your buck. “After that everything changed.”

A rock rolling down a mountain with a snow covered ease comes over Frost often. “A locomotive,” Schwartz declared him, describing how easy shots and positions sometimes materialize in a game where defense is often a liability to execution. Another of Schwartz’s promising whipper-snappers is “poker player” Chris Gentile, while the Kentucky captain John Brumback, one of its native sons Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton, and “under-rated” Troy Jones were in the field as well. Once Jones got down to man to man battle with Frost, fan support and dominance carried him to the winner take-all prize.

The morning brought education in many forms. While it’s easy to get a game with Efren “Bata” Reyes cheaply as Columbia, SC’s Kevin Brown found out to great amusement, what was going on in the New Orleans room was a stronger dose of medicine. Grady Mathews and Danny Diliberto taught new wave thought on old defensive ideas without a break shot in straight pool, followed by Brumback (with a little help from Freddie Bentivegna, who wears great names like Bugs and Taylor on his sleeves and heart) recreating an outstanding video lesson on secrets of banking without spin, as many of the Filipino masters have seeped those arts out of the game. Over in front of the IP’s live stream from the Harrison room, things happen faster but with less credit to forefathers. A mingling of the two can result in young pool devotees like little five month old Gibson having an easy time entering a man’s game. Clyde Ellis Read more ...

Association of Billiard Professionals 2012

Posted by admin as Billiard News, Players

The Association of Billiard Professionals 2012

The Association of Billiard Professionals is now entering its second full year of representing the greatest international players from around the world. 2011 was a paramount opening year for the ABP as it increased its membership from the original eleven on its Board of Directors to nearly a hundred professional players. It created a website designed by Keith Larsen and it was able to obtain legal counsel in the person of Dennis M. Walsh of Chicago,Illinois, who was able to lend his time and assistance to the cause of helping the pool players. It also sanctioned its first event, the 70th World Tournament of 14.1.

Its most publicized achievement was, of course tackling the problem of unsecure prize funds, most notably at the US Open 9-Ball Championship. What started out as vague statements that the players will be paid ended up as the subject of numerous negotiating sessions culminating in a signed contract between the promoter and the ABP. The BCA, through its CEO Rob Johnson, helped enforce the terms of the agreement and for the first time in many years, the players were paid in a timely manner.

“We had a great 2011 and we are all closer to accomplishing the goals of the ABP. We aim to help professional players get closer to their dreams. Looking back, we are happy of the cooperation we had with Barry Behrman on the US Open 9-Ball, and the assistance from the BCA through it’s CEO Rob Johnson. 2012 is going to be even better with more promoters stepping up to do the right things and players getting more benefits”, said Johnny Archer, ABP President and 25 year touring professional player.

The planned integration will be a process, and the ABP is not expecting an overnight change, and is ready to work with promoters and associations to take time to integrate these needed changes into our sport.

“We want to work with everyone and also let everyone know that we are here to stay. The professional players should always have representation. We want to be able to draw more coverage to our sport and get more money in so that promoters, sponsors, and players can all make a living. We need to first take care of the basics and do what we can to standardize the games, the rules, the equipment and the rankings. We need everyone’s help to make our sport organized. We know we have to crawl before we run,” added Rodney Morris, Vice President of the ABP and 20 year touring professional player.

Some of the prominent members of the ABP are world class professionals Shane Van Boening, Efren Reyes, Mika Immonen, Darren Appleton, Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen, Dennis Orcullo, Oliver Ortmann, Alex Pagulayan, Thorsten Hohmann, legendary players Buddy Hall, Mike Sigel, Allen Hopkins and many more.

The ABP is a united assembly of international professional billiard players. The ABP was formed to be the voice of players worldwide in order to assist in tournament and industry challenges. ABP directives include standardizing equipment, rules, insure the timely payment of prize money, assistance to promoters and sponsors, and overall protection and security of professional players. Asia Dominating at Women’s World 9-Ball Championship

Posted by admin as Billiard News, Players

Monica Webb AND BRITTANY BRYANT ARE ALL THAT STAND BEFORE AN ASIAN ONSLAUGHT AS THE WOMEN’S WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IS DOWN TO 16
By Ted Lerner
Photos by Alison Chang for the WPA

(Shenyang, China)- Monica Webb and Brittany Bryant must be wondering just what they’ve gotten themselves into.

Sure, the two talented players are incredibly delighted to still be standing in the final 16 of the 2011 Women’s World 9-Ball Championship. But what lies before them at this juncture is nothing short of a rampaging juggernaut that threatens to sweep them aside like a tsunami carries away a grass hut.

As the knockout round of the final 32 players concluded at the Liaoning Hunnan Sports Training Arena Friday evening in Shenyang, northeastern China, the USA’s Webb and Canada’s Bryant find themselves as the only non-Asian players remaining in what was, just a day earlier, a stellar field of 64 of the finest women pool players from 25 countries.

Of course it’s not particularly important what country a player comes hails from. But in this case the handwriting is on the wall and it’s printed in big, bold letters; 14 of the last 16 players in this year’s Women’s World 9-ball championship are from North Asia. More specifically, and perhaps more ominously, 10 out of those last 16 players are from China, where the women’s game is wildly popular and government backed training regimes are producing seemingly endless streams of young and brilliant talent.

The fact that Asian players, and Chinese women in particular, are taking over the game, is not news to anyone who has followed the women’s scene for some time. But what happened Friday in Shenyang felt like an exclamation point staking its claim at the end of a brutally cold fact.

As the knockout stages got underway at 6:30pm, two big names, world number 5 Allison Fisher and world number 6 Kelly Fisher, had already been shown the exits in the group stages. Thus the first match on the TV table held some significance as world number one and defending World 9-Ball champion Fu Xiaofang of China faced world number four Jasmin Ouschan of Austria.

A victory for the Austrian would have sent a loud and defiant message through the field, but Ouschan simply couldn’t keep up with the steadier Fu. The contest was close midway but the 23 year old Fu proved the better player on this night and won going away, 9-5.

Monica Webb and Brittany Bryant Copy Asia Dominating at Womens World 9 Ball Championship

Sure, the two talented players are incredibly delighted to still be standing in the final 16 of the 2011 Women’s World 9-Ball Championship.

All five Chinese women won their round of 32 matches in the first session of the night, including China’s massively popular Pan Xiaoting who easily defeated Turkey’s Eyul Kybaroglu, 9-1. The once pioneering Pan, who’s surely no longer a betting favorite in China, will now face world number three Ga Young Kim of Korea in what is sure to be a high profile glamour match on Saturday. Kim took down Miyuki Fuke of Japan, 9-3.

Chichuro Kawahara of Japan continued her fine play by thoroughly beating the Philippines Rubilen Amit, 9-4. Taiwan star Lin Yuan Chun kept her campaign going by defeating 15 year old Belgian Kamila Khodjaeva by the same score line.

The second session of the round of 32 saw what appeared to be a massive surprise result when Korea’s Yu Ram Cha got hammered 9-4 by a relative unknown Chinese player, 16 year old Gao Meng. It turns out, however, that Gao is another one of these massive talents here that have been flying under the radar of bigger names such as Pan, Fu and Siming Chen. Gao actually played in the Women’s World Championship two year ago at the age of 14, where she knocked out Ouschan in a hill-hill thriller. The friendly Gao, who’s still a high school student, lives in Shanghai where she trains 6-8 hours every day under the guise of the local association.

Gao will now face China’s 2009 World 9-ball champion and world number 7 Liu ShaSha, who kept the storyline running for the ho Read more ...

Europeans Eager to Regain Predator Championship

Top Europeans like Huidji See are keeping their eyes on the prize this week

Manila, Philippines- Can the European wave of wins be stopped? That will be the big question this week in Manila at The 11th Annual Predator International Championships produced by Dragon Promotions. The past two Predator Championships were both won by Filipinos (Orcullo, Reyes) but recently Europe has been dominating events in Asia and America. A world class ensemble of pro pool players will vie in singles combat September 14-18th, 2011 at the Robinson’s Galleria next to the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Players from around the world will be fighting hard to win one of the longest running and prestigious titles in pool.

” I’m really looking forward to the Predator Championships. Unfortunately I was unable to play last year, but I believe this year we have a strong European line up so that gives us a good chance”, says Darren Appleton of The United Kingdom, who is the current reigning US Open Champion. ” I believe the Europeans are the guys to beat in tournament play, as we have pretty much dominated the last 3-4 years. Even my own game is in good shape recently, and I feel am due a big win after so many close finishes this year in the big tournaments so hopefully it’s my time. Predator always put on great events with Dragon Promotions. And with it being 10Ball, it’s definitely the players game. Nobody wants to miss out on the tournament, and it will be a world championships standard field. The ultimate winner will need to beat many champions along the way.”

Predator world class players include US Open Champion Darren Appleton, Interpool Champ Raj Hundal, Poison Pro Classic Champion Charlie Williams, World 8-Ball Champ Dennis Orcullo, World 10-Ball Champion Jasmin Ouschan, Former World 9-Ball Champion Ronnie Alcano, Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet, China Open Champ Chris Melling, World 14.1 Champ Stephan Cohen, Asian Champ Lee Van Corteza, World 14.1 Bronze Medalist Max Eberle, European Champ David Alcaide, Former Predator Championship Winner Tony Drago, and Reigning Predator Champion Efren Reyes!

darren appleton super billiards1 Europeans Eager to Regain Predator Championship

Appleton is always a major threat to snap off a big event.

Women’s World 10-Ball Champion Jasmin Ouschan was asked about her chances to win the event.

“Well I haven´t played that many men events in the past months so right now I am not thinking about winning the whole event other than focusing on my performance and one match at the time. After the event I am going to the Womens World 9-Ball Championship so I also want to use this event to get in shape, to find my game and rhythm.”

Will the Europeans win?

“I believe the Europeans are very strong and they can always win events like that but in the end the only thing that matters is who brings the best performance.”

Who is the hottest player now from Europe and the overall favorite of the event?

“I think Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann seem to be in a good shape right now since they won the last two big events, but the Philippines players are always dangerous as well. I think the Predator Championships stands for quality. All the players know how popular billiards is in the Philippines and it is always great to play tournaments in such a billiard loving country”, ended Ouschan in the interview.

World 10-Ball Champion Huidji See predicts a possible Dutch victory….

“I feel confident in 10Ball and if I can get my break working for this tournament, I can do some real damage. I think my chances are as good as anybodys. The Read more ...
