Webb scored her first title on the Women's Professional Billiard Association tour.

Monica Webb secured her first Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) championship title, winning their Tour Championships over top-ranked Kelly Fisher. The event was held November 13-16 at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL.

Webb’s undefeated tournament journey started with a 9-4 victory over Val Finnie. She then sent Ewa Laurance to the left side of the chart with a compelling 9-4 win, and Jeanette Lee was her next victim, falling in a tightly contested 9-7 match. In the final 16, she met young gun Anna Kostanian, and the two fought to hill-hill before Webb advanced to the quarterfinals.

Her opponent, the number-two ranked Karen Corr, took the first game of the match, but after that Webb took the next three for a 3-1 lead. They traded the next two games after a failed safety attempt by both, and then some back-and-forth play led to Webb going up 5-2 in the shortened race to 7. Corr got a shot on the 4 ball that was intended to be left safe by Webb, and she ran out to get back within two games. Webb left Corr an open shot on the 1 ball in the next, and Corr cleared the table, but Webb then reached the hill when Corr fouled on the 1 ball. After trading innings, Webb forced a foul from Corr on the 3 ball, and Webb took ball in hand to win the match 7-4.

Vivian Villareal and Xiaoting Pan played in another quarterfinal match that was neck and neck until the score reached 3 apiece. However, two critical errors by Pan put Villareal at 5-3 up, and then a failed safety attempt by Pan on the 5 ball gave Villareal the hill. Pan only took one more rack before Villareal, with a stunning one-rail massé kick shot on the 3 ball that ultimately led to her pocketing the 6-9 combo for the win.

Sarah Rousey, who defeated Allison Fisher again for the second time this year, reached the quarterfinals to match up with Gerda “G-Force” Hofstatter. Still high on her success, she took a commanding three-rack lead against the Austrian. Rousey missed a kick shot on the 3 ball in the next rack, and Hofstatter drew a bit closer, but Rousey rallied after trading safeties on the 2 ball and cleared to go up 5-2. Hofstatter’s bad luck continued as she hooked herself on the 5 and fouled, giving Rousey ball in hand and the hill. Hofstatter took the next rack when Rousey left her a peek at the 4 ball. It looked as though Hofstatter would win the following game, too, after Rousey clipped the 9 ball en route to the 2, but Hofstatter scratched on the 3 ball, and Rousey ran out to win 7-3.

In a brutal quarterfinal match that saw Kelly Fisher advance to the semifinals, Helena Thornfeldt never seemed to get composed throughout. A series of errors and rattled balls gave Fisher such an advantage, she was able to win the match in a wipeout 7-0.

Though it’s been 10 years since Villareal has won a title, her opponent in the semifinals, Webb, had never won one, and she was on a mission. However, Villareal is sponsored by the Seminole Tribe of Florida and was playing in their casino. It turned out to be a tight match. Though Webb took a three-rack lead from the get-go, Villareal got on the board when Webb, playing from a snooker behind the 7 and 8 balls, left Villareal an open table. Webb recovered to take advantage of a poor safety and go up 5-1. But if Webb was hoping for an easy victory at that point with two racks to go, she had another thing coming. Villareal fought back to come within a game to make it 5-4, but they traded the next two racks, with Webb reaching the hill. Villareal had the break advantage but missed a two-way shot on the 4-9. With an open table, Webb was able to dish up to make it to the finals 7-5.

“Kwik Fire” Fisher made short work of her semifinal opponent, Rousey, taking a 6-0 lead. A combination of bad luck and a couple of mistakes went against Rousey, and though the crowd was behind her, she was overpowered. In the seventh game Rousey broke, pocketed a ball, and cleared the table to get on the board 6-1. When Fisher rattled the 3 ball, it seemed as though Rousey might get another rack, but she didn’t have a clear shot. She kicked in the 3 but then was forced to play safe on the 4 ball and left it dead center. Fisher could see just enough to pocket it and then clear the rest of the table to win 7-1.

The final match between Fisher and Webb started off fairly evenly, with the first two racks being split. From there, though, Fisher took the next two games to go up 3-1. Unfazed, Webb broke and ran the next rack and then won a safety battle over the 1 ball to knot the score at 3 apiece. Webb missed a one-rail kick in the next, giving the lead back to Fisher, but she quickly tied it back up when Fisher scratched on the 8, leaving Webb only the 9 ball. A failed position shot on the 5 ball by Fisher put Webb in the lead for the first time in the match. When Fisher instigated a safety skirmish on the 1 ball in the following rack, it was she who ended up leaving Webb a shot and handing her the hill 6-4. Webb broke and played safe on the 2 ball; when Fisher kicked at it and left Webb a tricky shot, Webb opted to cross-bank it into the corner. She negotiated another difficult shot on the 3 to get excellent position on the 4, and from there, with four balls left, she painstakingly picked her way through to win her first WPBA title 7-4.

Kelly "Kwikfire" Fisher bested Vivian "The Texas Tornado" Villareal on the finals of the Women"s Professional Billiard Association Pacific Coast Classic.

After a stunning, hotly contested final match, Kelly Fisher has emerged the champion of the WPBA Pacific Coast Classic. This four-day event was hosted by the Chinook Winds Casino & Resort in Lincoln City, OR, and boasted a full 64-player field.

In the first semifinal match, shorted to 7 for ESPN taping purposes, Monica Webb and Vivian Villareal faced off. It’s been ten years since the veteran Villareal has captured a title, and Webb has never taken first on the tour. Though Villareal broke in the first game, Webb ended up taking first blood after her opponent missed the 3 ball. A safety battle gave the advantage back to Villareal, who tied it up at 1-all despite a cell phone going off when she was getting down to shoot the 9.

Surprisingly, the first phone alarm was not enough to deter it from happening again, as Villareal was shooting the 6 ball in the third rack and was interrupted. Though disturbed, she continued on to clear the table and then took the next rack to go up 3-1. A scratch on the 2 ball by Villareal led to Webb drawing within a game after the following rack. However, a scratch on the break by Webb in the next gave Villareal back the two-rack advantage. Villareal then missed position on a safety on the 7 ball, putting Webb back in action to make it 4-3 Villareal. Though she won game 8, while trying for a break-out shot on the 5 and 8, Webb missed the 4 ball in the next rack, and Villareal cleared. She then reached the hill after a failed safety attempt by Webb, making it 6-4. An empty break by Villareal gave the table to Webb in the final rack, but she missed position on the 2 ball, and Villareal gained another inning. She ran out, showing off her shot-making skills, to win 7-4 and advance to the finals.

The second semifinal turned out to be a hill-hill nail-biter. Kelly Fisher scratched on the break in the first rack, and Karen Corr ran out to take the first game. Fisher countered in the next by winning the safety battle on the 1 ball. Several errors by Corr allowed Fisher to take the lead 4-2. Fisher broke and ran out the next rack to make it 5-2, and then Fisher reached the hill after a failed safety attempt on the 1 ball by Corr left her an out. Fisher came up empty on her next break, and Corr cleared to make it 6-3. Corr also notched the next rack: She pocketed a ball on her break but missed the 1 ball. Unable to see it, Fisher was forced to kick and left Corr a long shot, which she missed. However, Fisher scratched on the 2 ball, giving Corr ball in hand and another game.

Another safety battle ensued in the following rack, with Corr maneuvering Fisher into a position where she fouled, again ending with Corr receiving ball in hand and a free rein, which she used to draw within a rack at 6-5 Fisher. Fisher got to the table when Corr came up dry on her next break, but Fisher, after fluking in the 6 ball, missed a defensive play on the 2 and left Corr a shot. Corr played out the dicey rack and made it a hill-hill encounter. Fisher made a ball on her final break and was faced with a long-rail bank on the 1, which she pocketed with aplomb. She picked through the rest of the balls to win the match 7-6 and advance to meet Villareal in the finals.

The final match was as closely contended as they come. It was touch and go from the start. Fisher ran out the first rack after a kick by Villareal on the 3 ball, but she missed a 5-9 combo in the next, and “The Tornado” tied it up. An easy 2 ball was missed by Villareal, and Fisher dished up, but then Villareal countered with a break and run-out. Not to be outdone, Fisher did the same, making the score 3-2 in her favor. A miss on the 4 ball in the next led to Villareal evening the score, and then she took the lead to make it 4-3.

Fisher capitalized on a missed 3 ball to make it an even match, but a determined Villareal took charge when Fisher came up dry on her next break, making it 5-4 in her favor. But Fisher had other ideas. Villareal took a swing at a 5-9 combo but missed, leaving an open table for Fisher in the following rack, and then Fisher reached the hill after each player exchanged innings on the 5 ball. Charged up for the win, Villareal ran out the final rack but missed the 9 ball. After studying it carefully, Fisher coolly banked it into the side for the 7-5 victory.

Karen "The Irish Invader" Corr will be taking on Kelly "Kwikfire" Fisher in the semifinals of the WPBA Pacific Coast Classic

From a field of 64, only 4 ladies remain to vie for first place at the WPBA Pacific Coast Classic. Hosted by Chinook Winds Casino & Resort in Lincoln City, OR, this event concludes Sunday, October 5.

The final round of 16 began earlier Saturday evening, with half of the field coming in from the one-loss side and half from the winners’ side. Monica Webb found herself challenged by Janet Atwell but was too strong, advancing 9-7 to meet defending champ Allison Fisher in the quarterfinals. Fisher had ousted Sarah Rousey with a resounding 9-3 win. That momentum wasn’t enough, though, to carry Fisher through to the semifinals, for Webb defeated her after a tightly contested 9-7 match.

Vivian “The Texas Tornado” Villareal, who took fourth at the WPBA Carolina Classic last month, advanced to the quarterfinals after a 9-4 drubbing of the tour’s number-four player Ga Young Kim. She played third-ranked Xiaoting Pan, who earlier wreaked revenge on Gerda Hofstatter and eliminated her 9-6. In the previous round, Hofstatter had sent Pan to the west side of the chart 9-6. On a roll, Villareal rolled right through Pan in the quarterfinals, going hill-hill with her before triumphing 9-8.

Number-two-ranked Karen Corr returned from the one-loss side to challenge fellow former snooker player Kim Shaw after winning a 9-8 nail-biter over Line Kjorsvik. Corr suffered a surprising 9-6 loss in the first round to Kyoko Sone. Shaw pulled off a 9-4 defeat of U.S. Open runner-up Iris Ranola of the Philippines. In the quarterfinals, a determined Corr took charge of the match and surged through to win 9-5.

The last quarterfinal match featured the tour’s number-one-ranked player, Kelly Fisher, versus Yu Ram Cha. Interestingly, Fisher lost in the second round to Cha 9-7. To reach the quarterfinals, Fisher eliminated Jeanette Lee 9-4, while Cha sent Anna Kostanian packing 9-6. Fisher got her revenge, sending Cha home in a fifth-place tie by winning 9-5.

The two semifinal matches will feature Monica Webb versus Vivian Villareal and Karen Corr versus Kelly Fisher.

Hurst managed to squeak by Nelson in the first round of the Women's Professional Billiard Association Pacific Coast Classic

The first round at the WPBA’s Pacific Coast Classic, hosted by the Chinook Winds Casino & Resort in Lincoln City, OR, has wound down, with some surprising upsets along the way.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the first-round matches revolved around the match-up between Karen Corr and Kyoko Sone. Corr, currently ranked number two on the women’s tour, was sent to the one-loss side by the Japanese player with a decisive 9-6 score.

Tiffany Nelson also enjoyed a quick trip to the west courtesy of Southern California’s Stacy Hurst, who defeated her in a 9-7 upset. And Yu Ram Cha bested Montana’s Morgan Steinman in a match that didn’t see Steinman lodge a game on the scoreboard.

Otherwise, the top seeds have come through in the first round. Kelly Fisher, the tour’s number-one player, easily handled Irene Henry 9-2, while Allison Fisher bested Maureen Seto 9-1. Ga Young Kim, ranked fourth on the tour, had little trouble sending Supadra Boonpasook left 9-4, and third-ranked Xiaoting Pan won her match against Michelle Rakin 9-5.

Runner-up at the WPBA’s last event, Iris Ranola of the Philippines shows every indication that she is here to stay, besting Melinda Huang 9-3. Her next opponent will be Michell Monk, who just defeated Megan Minerich in a double-hill nail-biter.

Up-and-coming Anna Kostanian breezed through her first match, dealing a 9-0 loss to Stephanie Mitchell, and will next play Belinda Calhoun, who earlier bested Brittany Bryant 9-3. Jeanette Lee had little trouble with Colorado player Bonnie Plowman, sending her west 9-2, while Ewa Laurance also won her match with a resounding 9-0 score.

Ouschan Overpowers Lee to Take Carolina Classic Title
WPBA Carolina Classic / Durham, NC

Ouschan commanded Lee and Villareal during her matches on Sunday at the WPBA Carolina Classic.

In a stunning near-wipeout final match, Jasmin Ouschan of Austria has taken first place at the WPBA Carolina Classic over Jeanette Lee. This marks only the second championship title Ouschan has taken on the WPBA, the first being the 2006 EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas, NV.

Though Ouschan missed the 3 ball in the first game, she didn’t leave any easy options for Lee, who left Ouschan the opportunity to clear the table for the first point. Lee then came up empty on her break, and Ouschan carefully picked her way through to go up 2-0. A safety battle in the next game saw Ouschan again triumphing.

A rare missed jump shot by Ouschan gave Lee the chance to run the final few balls and get on the board 3-1, but her momentum was soon stumped by Ouschan, who broke and ran the next rack. Another dry break by Lee saw Ouschan return to the table in the sixth rack, but she missed the 3 ball. Lee, though, missed the 6 ball, as did Ouschan in her next inning. Left with a thin cut on the 6, Lee missed again, and Ouschan cleared the table to go up 5-1. The missed 6 ball apparently rattled Lee badly, for Ouschan was able to take control of the table in the next two games to win the title and tournament 7-1.
