Kressel and Eliazar Earn Tiger Pool Stop
Tiger Pool Tour / Winchester, VA
by Skip Maloney

Larry Kressel and Cheryl Squire earned top honors at the Tiger Planet Pool Tour.
Larry Kressel withstood two potent challenges by Shawn Putnam to capture first place in the open division of the Tiger Pool Tour stop on the weekend of December 13-14. In the ladies’ division, Cheryl Squire, in addition to placing second in tour point totals for the year, came back from a defeat in the hot seat match to win the finals. The $1,000-added open event drew 62 entrants to Blue Fox Billiards in Winchester, VA, while 13 entrants took part in the $500-added ladies’ tournament.
Kressel was gaining momentum as he moved into the final three matches. He sent Brandon Shuff to the one-loss side 9-1 before facing Putnam in the hot seat match. Putnam, fresh off a 9-7 win over Alan Duty, battled to double-hill before heading west to eventually meet Sam Monday in the semifinals.
Monday had worked his way from among the event’s final 12 competitors, defeating Andy Lincoln 7-1 and Ryan McCreesh 7-6 before facing Shuff. John Newton, in the meantime, defeated Matt Krah 7-6 and Shawn Toni 7-5 for the right to meet Duty. It was Shuff and Duty dropping into the tie for fifth, as Newton and Monday moved into the quarterfinals. Monday advanced 7-3 to meet Putnam, who moved back to a rematch versus Kressel with a 7-4 win.
Kressel looked to have things pretty much in control from the start in the finals, jumping out to what looked to be an insurmountable 8-0 lead in the race to 11. Putnam, though, started to chip away, winning two in a row, before giving up the eleventh game. He won two more to make it 9-4 before Kressel reached the hill. Kressel came up dry on the subsequent break and Shawn added three to his total, before Kressel closed it out 11-7 and brought home the first-place prize.
From among the winners’ side final four, Squire, in the ladies’ event, sent Ceci Strain to the one-loss side 7-2, as Rachel Eliazar did the very same thing to Falon Fairleigh. Eliazar sent Squire to the semifinals, gaining the hot seat, and waited for her return. Strain went on to defeat Tiffany Adams 5-1 and met Spring Helligragh in the quarterfinals. She shut Helligragh out and faced Squire.
Squire jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, and after Strain got a single point on the board, reached the hill. Strain battled back to win the next two, but Squire closed it out and moved back for her rematch versus Eliazar. Squire took an early lead that she never relinquished, finally defeating Eliazar 9-4 and capturing the first-place prize.

Davis Defeats Chohan for Top Tiger Billiards Stop
Tiger Pool Tour / Midlothian, VA
by Andy Lincoln

Davis snapped off the Tiger Planet Pool Tour stop at Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA.
The Tiger Tour returned to the new Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA, for their October 25-26 stop. With this being a post-U.S. Open event, many players made the short drive from Chesapeake, VA, to shoot at the $2,500-added purse provided by Diamond Billiards, but tour regular Mike Davis took home the gold.
An extremely tough field of 52 players signed up Saturday with top names such as John Schmidt, Mike Davis, Charlie Bryant, Tony Chohan, and Ronnie Wiseman. There were two first-round power match-ups of note. Current Tiger Tour points leader Brandon Shuff defeated 2006 U.S. Open champion Schmidt 9-5, and Mexican veteran Rafael Martinez stopped high-stakes gambler Johnathan Pinegar 9-5.
However, Shuff and Martinez had short-lived victories as they lost to Chohan 9-8 and David Vaughn 9-7, respectively, in the third round. Local Richmond native Larry Kressel took down room owner Thomas Dorsey and DC area superstar Manuel Chau with a pair of 9-5 scores. Joining Chohan, Vaughn, and Kressel on the winners’ side going into Sunday were Andy Lincoln, Brian White, Leonardo Andam, Davis, and Bryant. Another eight top players remained on the one-loss side.
Sunday play began with Chohan, Davis, and Kressel easily advancing and Vaughn recovering to defeat Brian White 9-8. Chohan and Davis reached the hot seat with little fanfare over Vaughn and Kressel. The hot seat match was close, with Chohan escaping with a 9-8 win.
The story in the elimination bracket was a pair of runs by Pinegar and Josh Roberts. After losing his first match, Roberts strung together seven wins, including over strong players such as Jeff Abernathy, White, Wiseman, and Kressel. Pinegar’s run was equally impressive, defeating Scott Rabon, Shuff, Shane Harvey, Bryant, Andam, and Vaughn. Pinegar continued his run, placing Roberts into the fourth-place spot, but then Davis shook off his disappointing hot seat loss by defeating Pinegar 7-3. The rematch between Chohan and Davis was close the whole way, with Davis taking an 11-10 win in the single-set final.

McCreesh and Meraglio Win on Tiger Pool Stop
Tiger Pool 9-Ball Tour / Winchester, VA
by Skip Maloney

Ryan McCreesh took the long road to the title at the Tiger Planet Pool held at Blue Fox Billiards in Winchester, VA.
Ryan McCreesh took two from Brandon Shuff to go undefeated in the open division of the Tiger Pool Tour stop the weekend of October 4-5, while Tina Meraglio bested Ming Ng in the finals of the women’s event. The $1,500-added open event drew 35 entrants, and 9 competed in the $500-added women’s event, hosted by Blue Fox Billiards in Winchester, VA.
McCreesh took more of a labored road to the hot seat match against Shuff, giving up 19 racks over the 4 matches it took to get there. Shuff, on the other hand, playing 5 matches, gave up only 12 racks. Among the final four on the winners’ side, McCreesh sent Manny Chau west 9-7, as Shuff sent Chris Bruner over 9-5. In what turned out to be the easiest match of his weekend, McCreesh sent Shuff to the semifinals with a 9-2 victory.
On the one-loss side, a father and son battled for the right to meet Chau, as Matt Clatterbuck and Scott Tollefson fought to meet Bruner. Brian Deska defeated his dad 7-4, with Tollefson ending Clatterbuck’s tournament bid 7-5. Deska then eliminated Chau in a double-hill struggle as Tollefson shut out Bruner. It was Tollefson moving on to the semifinals with a 7-4 victory over Deska. He met a determined Shuff, who dropped him into third place for a second chance at McCreesh.
Shuff opened the finals by jumping out to a 3-0 lead. McCreesh fought back to tie it. They battled back and forth to a tie at 8, when McCreesh took two in a row to reach the hill first. Shuff matched him with two games of his own to knot it at 10. Breaking the final rack, Shuff came up empty. McCreesh sunk the first two balls and then lined up a 3-9 combination that finished the tournament.
In the women’s final, Tina Meraglio defeated Ming Ng to capture the first-place prize. Rachel Eliazar and Pauline Mattes finished third and fourth, respectively.

Green and Shea Score on Tiger Tour
Tiger Pool Tour / Arlington, VA
by Andy Lincoln

Danny Green, tour founder, and Linda Shea pulled down top honors in their respective divisions.
The Tiger Pool Tour returned to Arlington, VA, September 13-14 for their ninth event of the season. This $2,000-added event was hosted by Champion Billiards Café, a player-owned room and a player favorite in Northern Virginia. Danny Green, tour founder, and Linda Shea walked away with top honors in their respective divisions.
Green, who won last month’s special one-pocket event, started out strong with wins over Dustin Paris and Andy Lincoln. He followed that up by defeating a tough Scott Tollefson to advance to Sunday’s final four on the winners’ side. Shaun Wilkie worked his way through four matches for his trip to Sunday. The top half of the bracket saw Matt Krah easily advance including a 9-4 win over current points leader Manuel Chau. Ilir Jaho joined these players on the winners’ side.
On Sunday, Krah advanced past Jaho and Green took down Wilkie by identical 9-6 scores. The hot seat match was uneventful as Green defeated Wilkie 9-6. The elimination bracket was being fought out with veteran Ed Deska working his way forward. Quality wins over Shane Jackson and Tollefson were followed up with a 9-2 win over Jaho. Wilkie recovered from his loss to Green to squeak past Chau 9-8 before ending Deska’s run 9-6. Wilkie earned a rematch with Green after downing Krah 9-6.
The single-set final race to 11 between Green and Wilkie stayed close the whole way. At double-hill, both players seemed unable to close the deal. There were several challenging table layouts that prevented the easy out, and it was Green who finally snapped out of it to take the win.
A small but strong group of ten ladies entered the women’s event. All ten of these ladies had placed in the money on the Tiger Tour, so there were no easy matches. Cheryl Squire, sponsored on tour by Big Daddy’s Billiards, started her day out with big wins over Ming Ng 7-4 and Linda Shea 7-2. Rachel Eliazar from North Carolina has been playing well lately and sent Squire to the elimination bracket 7-5. Ji-Hyun Park took care of the top half of the bracket with a pair of 7-5 wins over Pauline Mattes and tour owner Ceci Strain. Eliazar captured the hot seat by a 7-4 margin.
In the elimination bracket, Ng and Shea rolled through their matches before meeting up. Shea put Ng into the fourth spot with a 5-4 decision. Another 5-4 score eliminated Park, putting Shea into the single-set final race to 9 with Eliazar. Shea turned it on at this point, winning the final comfortably 9-3.

Linda Shea added another title to her collection.

Tollefson Commanding on Tiger Billiard Tour
Tiger Pool Tour / Winchester, VA
by Skip Maloney
Scott Tollefson gave up only two racks in his final two matches to take first place in the Tiger Pool Tour stop’s open division. The $1,500-added event, held July 19-20, drew 51 entrants to Blue Fox Billiards in Winchester, VA.
Tollefson started Sunday among the winners’ side final four and found himself in the midst of a struggle versus Larry Kressel. Tollefson finally prevailed 9-7 to move into the hot seat match against John Schmidt, who’d just defeated tour founder Danny Green. Tollefson gave Schmidt just one chance at the table during an eight-rack run that put him on the hill. Tollefson made the 9 ball on the subsequent break but scratched. With ball in hand, Schmidt started a last-ditch effort to turn things around, but when one of his shots rattled, he conceded the 9-0 victory.
In the meantime, Brandon Shuff, Joey Ryan, Kevin West and eventual finalist Shaun Wilkie had advanced to the final four on the one-loss side. Wilkie had advanced at the expense of WPBA pro Janet Atwell, who chose to forfeit her match against him to continue competing in the ladies’ event.
Ryan and Wilkie dropped Shuff and West into a tie for seventh, respectively, with identical 7-4 victories and moved into matches against Green and Kressel, over from the winners’ side. Ryan and Kressel tied for fifth place, as Green and Wilkie moved into the quarterfinals. Wilkie got to the finals with a 7-4 victory over Green and a subsequent 7-3 victory over Schmidt in the semifinals.
Tollefson was not to be denied, however. He took command early and gave up only two racks to finish it 11-2 and capture the first-place prize.

Wilkie and Lac Win Billiards Gold in Sterling
Tiger Pool Tour / Sterling, VA
by Skip Maloney
Shaun Wilkie held off a strong surge by Brandon Shuff in the finals but finished undefeated in the Tiger Pool Tour stop the weekend of July 6-7. The Bob Stocks Memorial, hosted by the First Break Café in Sterling, VA, drew 48 entrants to the $1,500-added open tournament and 12 women to the $350-added ladies’ event, won by My-Hanh Lac.
Earlier in the day, Wilkie and Shuff had faced down Matt Krah and Shane Jackson among the winners’ side final four to advance. The hot seat match-up that followed had Wilkie prevailing over Shuff 9-6.
On the one-loss side, Matt Clatterbuck and Danny Green advanced to face each other in the quarterfinals, where Clatterbuck dropped Green into fourth place with a 7-5 victory and then turned to face Shuff in the semifinals. Shuff, looking to at least duplicate his second-place finish on the tour’s last stop, ousted Clatterbuck to get his chance.
Wilkie jumped out to a commanding 8-3 lead in the race-to-11 finals before Shuff fought back to tie it. After trading the next two racks, Wilkie reached the hill first. Shuff had his chances in last game, but Wilkie left him with a jump shot that he missed. With ball in hand, Wilkie closed it out at 11-9 to take first place.
In the ladies’ event, My-Hanh Lac chalked up her second straight Tiger Tour win with a commanding 9-2 victory over Rachel Eliazar in the finals. The final four on the winners’ side of Sunday’s event ended up as the top four finishers.
Pauline Mattes and Rachael Eliazar dropped Sueyen Rhee and Ji Hyun Park out of contention before facing each other in the quarterfinals. Eliazar advanced to face Kim Smith in the semifinals on the heels of a hill-hill victory and went on to challenge Lac. In a race to 9, Lac wasted little time in repeating her victory on the tour’s last stop, defeating Eliazar 9-2 to capture the first-place prize.

Schmidt and Lac Take First at Diamond Billiards

Schmidt and Lac Take First at Diamond Billiards
Tiger Tour / Midlothian, VA
by InsidePOOL Staff
The Tiger Tour was held at Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, VA, for the first time May 31-June 1, where the room added a total of $2500 to the event with the help of Jagermeister and a cue donated by John Schmidt’s sponsor, OB1, and the sponsors of the Tiger Tour. Billiard professional John Schmidt took top honors in the open division, while My-Hanh Lac took the ladies’ event.
The open field was a strong one, with 41 players coming out to prevent Chau from taking his fourth tournament in a row and 20 ladies attending for the title of Virginia State champion. Saturday’s line-up included several of the top points leaders of the tour, along with some new faces from the Richmond area.
The surprise visitor from Florida was pro player Schmidt, currently sponsored by the host pool room. Schmidt’s tournament run didn’t allow a single player to reach above four games. He fought his way through to the final four in the winners’ bracket, where he dispatched of David Hunt 9-3 to face Chau. This was a much-anticipated match, but Schmidt sent Chau to the one-loss side with a 9-4 win.
His wins Saturday included Dave White 9-3, Larry Kressel 9-4, and his final match for Saturday against Dustin Paris ended 9-3, taking him into Sunday, where he would meet Richmond local David Hunt in the final four of the winners’ bracket.
After taking an early loss Saturday to Paul Helms, Brandon Shuff began plugging away to get back to the top. He struggled through the one-loss side to best Larry Kressel 7-0 and advance to the semifinals against Chau. He bested Chau a stunning 7-1 to meet Schmidt. The finals weren’t too evenly matched, for Schmidt walked away with the first-place prize after defeating Shuff in an 11-0 victory.
The ladies’ division Sunday saw 20 players vying for the title of Virginia State champion and the much-coveted spot at the WPBA 2008 U.S. Open. With a surprise visit from Virginia’s Governor Gilmore, the ladies were really in the spotlight.
Newcomer to the tour Iris Ranola of Manila, Philippines, appeared to be the toughest competition for Ming Ng and My-Hanh Lac early in the day. The big surprise for the day was longtime friend of the tour, Christine Foster. Foster pushed her way through the winners’ bracket, defeating Ann Bellamy 7-4 and Katie Cowan 7-5 but was sent to the elimination bracket by Lac. She didn’t give up and went on to defeat Sharon O’Hanlon 7-5 for a shot at Ng. Ng didn’t give her a chance, defeating her 7-0, sending Foster into fourth place. Ng and Lac matched up to see who would go on to play Ranola in the finals, with Lac coming up with the win. Lac had already qualified for the U.S. Open and was going strictly for the Virginia State title. Lac came out ahead 9-7 against Ranola, so Ranola will be attending the WPBA 2008 U.S. Open alongside My-Hanh Lac.

Chau and Shea Make Strong Closings
Tiger Pool Tour / Rockville, MD
by Skip Maloney
Billiard player Manuel Chau started strong and finished strong in an undefeated romp at the Tiger Pool Tour stop on the weekend of May 3-4. The $1,250-added event drew 64 entrants to Orange Ball Billiards in Rockville, MD.
Chau started on Saturday with a decisive 9-2 victory in the tournament’s opening round, only to struggle through his next three match-ups. By the time he reached the final four on the winners’ side on Sunday, he’d lost 18 of 45 games in his middle three matches. His opponent in that final four, Joey Ryan, had lost 24 of his 54. By contrast, the other two opponents in the winners’ side final four, Shaun Wilkie and Brian Deska, had lost only 26 games combined. Both Deska and Wilkie had each shut out one of their opponents on their trip to the winners’ side final four.
As Wilkie and Deska struggled to a 9-6 Deska victory, Chau embarked on a closing run that saw him lose only 6 of his next 33 games. He defeated Ryan and then Deska 9-2 to move into the hot seat.
Over on the one-loss side of the bracket, Ryan McCreesh, Brandon Shuff, Eric Moore and Shane Jackson met in the final four match-ups there, with McCreesh and Moore advancing. McCreesh tallied his eighth victory on the one-loss side, defeating Moore before turning to Brian Deska in the semifinal match. Deska, having just lost to Chau, turned the 9-2 scoring in that match upside down, defeating McCreesh 9-3 to move back into the finals against Chau. The turnaround didn’t last long, as Chau closed out an undefeated weekend with his third 9-2 victory in a row to capture the first place prize.
In the women’s event, it was Linda Shea who emerged as the winner from a field of 14 entrants. Shea had been knocked to the one-loss side of the bracket by Ming Ng in the winner’s side round of eight and worked her way back through five opponents, losing only 10 games to meet and defeat Ng 9-6 in the final. She defeated Cheryl Squire in the quarterfinal match and Sharon O’Hanlon in the semifinal.

Chau and Ng Conquer All Comers

Chau and Ng Conquer All Comers
Tiger Pool Tour / Winchester, VA
by Andy Lincoln
The Tiger Tour headed West March 29-30 to Winchester, VA, and found a fantastic new room by the name of Blue Fox Billiards. The room has been open for less than a month, but already the weekend crowds kept the place packed. The tour brought in an additional 63 open division entrants and 13 ladies to claim their stake in the $2,000 added money, with Manuel Chau and Ming Ng winning their respective divisions.
Chau, the 2007 year-end final winner, took on Matt Clatterbuck, the new house pro of Blue Fox Billiards, in the second round. These two rivals fought it out, with Chau winning this one 9-8. Ryan McCreesh and Brandon Shuff both looked strong, advancing over their first three opponents to reach Sunday.
The winners’-side semifinals were uneventful with McCreesh defeating Moore and Chau overcoming Shuff. The hot seat match stayed close, but it was McCreesh taking the 9-6 win over Chau. In the elimination bracket, Moore and Shuff battled it out before each made a mistake at 6-all. Shuff walked away with the fortunate victory, placing Moore into the fourth-place spot. Chau jumped out 6-1 on Shuff but stalled out. Shuff came all the way back to 6-6 before an unlikely scratch on the break ended his tournament. The single-set final race to 11 stayed close most of the way, with McCreesh enjoying the upper hand. Chau closed in at the end and won 11-9.
Thirteen lucky ladies showed up Sunday for the women’s event. Ng, who won the previous tour stop, started her day with a tough matchup with WPBA pro Megan Minerich, where Ng came out on top 7-5. Ng and My-Hanh Lac reached the hot seat match with comfortable wins over Ji-Hyun Park and Nicole Vincent, respectively. This match turned out to be one-sided, with Lac easily defeating Ng 7-2.
The elimination bracket held few surprises as Park took the fourth spot at the hands of Minerich. Ng and Minerich had a close one with Ng coming out on top again 5-4. The single-set final race to 9 with Lac was much different than the previous meeting. Ng won this one with no problems 9-4.
