Larry Price won the J. Pechauer event at Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, GA.

Larry Price returned to the winning ways he’d established earlier this year with a January win in Louisville at the Derby City Classic Banks Division by completing an undefeated trip among 20 entrants in the $1,000-added open division of the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour, held December 13. On Sunday, December 14, in the $500-added amateur division of the same event, Jeff Tabet, who finished in a tie for fifth in the open event, completed his own undefeated journey through 20 amateur entrants. The event was hosted by Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, GA

From among the winners’ side final four on Saturday, Price started the final three legs of his journey to victory by shutting Tabet out and sending him to the one-loss side battle for fifth place. Tommy Kennedy, in the meantime, was busy sending Jesse Middlebrook to the same fate 7-2. By the same score, Price sent Kennedy to the semifinals.

It was Clint McCullough who ended Tabet’s open bid with a 7-5 win, as Cliff Joyner defeated Middlebrook 7-3. In the quarterfinal match that followed, Joyner had a 6-3 lead going into the tenth game, but McCullough took command and won the next four to move into the semifinals against Kennedy. Kennedy and McCullough struggled back and forth through the early stages of that semifinal match, until a few missed shots sealed Kennedy’s fate and McCullough turned his attention to Price.

Like Kennedy, McCullough battled in the finals but missed some critical shots near the end of the match. Price won it 9-7 to capture the first-place prize.

In the amateur event, Tabet was among the final four there, as well. He shut out Evan Beeson to move into the hot seat match and then sent Duane Bourgeois to the semifinals. David Shannon, who’d been sent west by Bourgeois from among the winners’-side final four defeated Beeson 4-2 in the quarterfinals but fell in his rematch against Bourgeois by the same score. Tabet wasted little time in the finals, finishing ahead by four racks and capturing the first-place prize.

Southern boy Steve Moore walked away with the December 6 stop of the J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour, defeating Jason Stemen in the finals. The event was hosted by Side Pocket Cue Club & Grill in Marietta, GA, and featured a $1,000-added prize purse.

Moore had to work his way through the one-loss side to the final match, and in the quarterfinals he matched up with and eliminated T.F. Whittington 7-5. He advanced to the semifinals against Jessie Middlebrook, who had just been dealt his first loss at the hands of Stemen 7-4. Middlebrook’s luck didn’t change in the semifinals, for Moore handed him a donut and went along his way. In the extended race-to-9 final match, Stemen put up a good fight, but it was Moore’s night, and he took the final match and title 9-6.

In the $500-added amateur event the next day, Jess Tabet took top honors. Duane Bourgeois sent Tabet to the one-loss side with a 5-4 victory in the hot seat match, but Tabet’s semifinal match against Amy Chen went in his favor 4-1, allowing him to make a return in the finals. There he wreaked revenge on Bourgeois, only allowing him one rack before winning the match 7-1.

Mark Coats and Jeff Mabry outlasted the field at Ultimate Billiards in Fort Pierce, FL on the Pechauer Billiard Tour.

Mark Coats completed an undefeated weekend at the J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour stop on November 8-9 with a finals victory over Josh Lewis. In the concurrent amateur event, Jeff Mabry took top honors over Steven Nevins. The $1,000-added open event drew 44 entrants, while the $500-added amateur tournament drew 46 to Ultimate Billiards in Fort Pierce, FL.

Working from among the winners’ side final four in the open event, Coats defeated Randy Epperson 9-6 to move into the hot seat match. His opponent for the hot seat, Curtis Kelley, had defeated Lewis 9-6. Coats sent Kelley west with a 9-7 victory to gain the hot seat.

On the one-loss side, John Rouse and Richard Broumpton emerged from the final 12 to meet Epperson and Lewis. Lewis and Broumpton advanced on the heels of identical 9-6 scores to meet each other in the quarterfinals. Lewis then dropped Broumpton into fourth place 9-5 and turned to face Kelley in the semifinals. Lewis was stepping up his game and downed Kelley 9-3 for the right to meet Coats.

In the race-to-11 finals, Coats and Lewis battled back and forth until Coats moved ahead to reach the hill at 10-8. Lewis jumped the cue ball off the table on the subsequent break, and with two more opportunities, Coats three-fouled him and captured the first-place prize.

In the amateur event, Mabry was among the final four and faced Nevins for the first time in the hot seat match. Nevins defeated Mabry 5-1, sending him to the semifinals against Steve Bristow, who’d defeated Greg Deaton in the quarterfinals. Mabry then defeated Bristow 4-1 and headed for the finals rematch against Nevins.  In the finals, Mabry took command early, avenging his earlier loss and captured first place 7-3.

Kennedy won his second straight J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour event at The Art of Billiards in Gainesville, FL.

Tommy Kennedy took a somewhat different route to win his second straight J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour stop the weekend of November 1-2. The $1,000-added event drew 34 entrants to The Art of Billiards in Gainesville, FL.

In Savannah, Kennedy was defeated in the opening round of play and battled back from the one-loss side to defeat Neil Fujiwara in the semifinals and Butch Croft in the finals. This time out, Kennedy gained the hot seat by sending Fujiwara west 9-4, and it was Croft battling back from the one-loss side to eventually meet him. From among the final four on the winners’ side in this event, it was Steve Foster heading west after a hill-hill victory by Kennedy and Walter Blacker following after a 9-5 defeat at the hands of Fujiwara.

Croft, in the meantime, advanced past Dan Kreiser 9-6 to meet Foster, as Te Tang defeated Alex Pemberton 9-7 for the right to meet Blacker. It was Croft and Blacker advancing to the quarterfinals, won by Croft 9-7. The repeat from the previous tour stop retained its symmetry, as Croft dropped Fujiwara into his second straight third-place finish and looked to change the final results.

He didn’t. In fact, not only was the end result the same, so was the final score—11-9—as Kennedy took his second straight win on the tour.

Dave Perry pulled off the win at the J Pechauer 9-Ball Tour stop at Smokie's in Virginia Beach, VA.

Two Daves locked horns twice in the J. Pechauer All-American Tour stop in Virginia Beach October 4, with Dave Perry emerging as the victor both times. The $530-added amateur event drew 16 entrants to Smokie’s in Virginia Beach, VA.

When they met for the first time, in the hot seat match, Perry dominated David Wallace 5-1 and waited for his return. Only one of the three matches among the final four lasted beyond six games. Perry had dispatched Harry Kernodle to the one-loss side with a commanding 5-2 victory, as Wallace sent Bill Mason over with an equally commanding 5-1 performance.

Early going on the one-loss side featured a husband and wife match-up (John and Luz Selbe), won by the wife, who would subsequently fall to Mike Ewing to end up in a tie for seventh place with Alfredo Alcazar. It was Joe Hughes, however, who managed to work his way back closest to the finals, defeating first Carla Rosetti and then Alcazar before meeting Kernodle and defeating him 5-2 to enter the quarterfinals. Mason dropped Ewing 5-3 to meet him. Hughes advanced one more step with a double-hill victory over Mason and then fell victim to Wallace 5-3 in the semifinals.

Unlike their first meeting, the finals proved to be a struggle for the Daves. They battled back and forth to hill-hill, at which point, a critical error cost Wallace and benefited Perry. Wallace stepped to the table with only the 9 ball left and rushed a cut shot that, in essence, cost him $175. Perry took the cue, sunk the 9 and completed his undefeated bid.

Results:
1st Dave Perry $400
2nd Dave Wallace $225

Tommy "TK from FLA" Kennedy lost his round but won every round afterwards to win the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour stop.

Tour director Tommy Kennedy was defeated in the opening round of play on his J. Pechauer 9-Ball Open stop the weekend of September 27-28 but proceeded to battle through ten opponents to capture first place. The $1,500-added event drew 46 players to the Southside Billiard Club in Savannah, GA. A second chance, $500-added tournament on Sunday drew 28 entrants and was won by Chad Stokes.

In the open event, as Kennedy was working his way back to the finals as Butch Croft, Walter Blacker, Michael Newsome, and Neil Fujiwara were the last four standing on the winners’ side. Croft defeated Blacker 9-3, as Fujiwara moved Newsome west 9-5. Croft sent Fujiwara to the semifinals with a 9-6 victory in the hot seat match.

On the one-loss side, Kennedy and Ron Park emerged from among the final 12, dropping John Swope and Josh Williams into seventh place, respectively, before facing Blacker and Newsome. It was Kennedy and Park advancing to the quarterfinals, with Kennedy winning that match 9-4. Kennedy improved on his 9-4 habit with a 9-3 defeat of Fujiwara in the semifinals.

Early on, it looked as though Kennedy’s streak was going to be halted. Croft had a 6-2 advantage going into the ninth game. A combination shot that sunk the 9 ball early gave Kennedy that game, which he turned into a six-pack that put him up 8-6. They maintained that two rack distance to the nineteenth game, when Croft took advantage of a missed bank shot by Kennedy on the 8 ball to pull within one at 10-9. Croft broke for the chance to tie it but missed on an early 1-9 combination that he left for Kennedy. Kennedy made that combination and secured the first-place win.

Yarborough Breezes Past Kennedy in J. Pechauer Billiards Stop

J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour / Fayetteville, GA

by Skip Maloney

In the first major event ever to be hosted by the Metro Sports Bar in Fayetteville, GA, Mitch Yarborough defeated Tommy Kennedy in the finals of the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour stop the weekend of August 2-3. The $1,000-added event drew 35 entrants to the Metro Sports Bar in what is hoped will be the first of many tournaments to be hosted there.

Kennedy and Yarborough squared off first in the hot seat match. Kennedy defeated Dimant Patel 9-3 to get there, as Yarborough, by the same score, defeated Tommy Lee Jones, who, in addition to being a BCA instructor for the venue, has a father who handles table maintenance and a mother who cooks there, as well. Yarborough sent Kennedy west with a 9-5 victory to take the hot seat.

On the one-loss side, Mike Newsome was working his way to the quarterfinals with early victories over Willis Knight and Barry Wilmington, followed by a hill-hill victory over Jones. T.F. Whittington, in the meantime, defeated Horace Godwin and Paul Turner before facing Patel and defeating him to move into the quarterfinals against Newsome. Newsome advanced 9-3 to the semifinals against Kennedy, who turned the tables on him with a 9-3 victory of his own to get back to a second chance against Yarborough.

With the hot seat match fresh in their minds, spectators expected something of a struggle, which never materialized. In what turned out to be the fastest match of the tournament, Kennedy won the first game before Yarborough caught fire, winning the next 11 to capture the first-place prize.

Archer Takes Athens by Storm

J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour / Athens, GA

by Skip Maloney

Johnny Archer found a mid-tournament stride that propelled him to a first place finish in the J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour June 21. A small field of 19 entrants was on hand for the $500-added, open portion of the event at Lucky Dawgs Billiards in Athens, GA.

After struggling through the opening two rounds, winning 7-5 and 7-6 to advance to the final four on the winners’ side, Archer sent Bruce Berrong, west with a commanding 7-1 victory. He followed that up in the hot seat match by defeating Henry Cofer without losing a single game.

Earlier in the day, on the one-loss side, Ed Roldan, Jim Jennings, Ron Park and T.F. Whittington advanced into the event’s final eight with victories over B.R. Tatum, David Shadden, Mark Patterson, and Marc Finley, respectively. Jennings and Park then moved into the final 6 with victories over Roldan and Whittington.

Berrong and Billy Holmes fought through the left side by dropping Ron Park and Jim Jennings into fifth place, respectively, and turning to face each other. Berrong defeated Holmes in the quarterfinals and Cofer in the semifinals by identical 7-2 scores.

Archer’s 14-1 momentum in the two matches that preceded the final didn’t stay with him in the rematch against Berrong, who, though making only one ball on any break in the match, never allowed Archer’s lead to advance beyond two games. At 6-5, with a chance to tie, Barrong missed an easy 8 ball that eventually put Archer up again by 2. Berrong won three of the next four racks to bring it to hill-hill, but Archer prevailed in the final game.

Kennedy Ably Wins Atlanta Billiard Event

Kennedy Ably Wins Atlanta Billiard Event
J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour / Atlanta, GA
by Skip Maloney
After the dust cleared, Tommy “TK” Kennedy went undefeated at his own tour’s June 14-15 stop, hosted by Mr. Cues 2 billiards parlor in Atlanta, GA. The J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour brought in 42 entrants to this $2,000-added event in which Kennedy came back from a defeat by Jonathan Pinegar to take the title.
Positioned among the final four on the winners’ side, Kennedy sent Clint McCullough to the one-loss side, as Jesse Middlebrooks was doing likewise to Henry Cofer. In the hot seat match that followed, Kennedy moved out to a slim 3-1 lead that he never relinquished, in spite of attempts by Middlebrooks to catch up. Middlebrooks got within a game twice, but at 7-6 Kennedy took command, winning the next two.
On the one-loss side, Pinegar was working his way back to the finals through Ed Roldan, John “Stoney” Stone, and Cofer, which brought him to a quarterfinal match against Steve Moore. Moore had, for the second time in the tournament, defeated Kim Davenport, and then Clint McCullough to get to Pinegar. In a hill-hill match, Moore looked to be in the driver’s seat until, in the deciding game, he missed a shot at an open 4 ball, which ultimately cost him the match, sending Pinegar into the semifinals against Middlebrooks. Pinegar dispatched Middlebrooks 9-5 and turned to face Kennedy.
In the opening set, the two struggled back and forth to a 7-7 tie, with Pinegar reaching the hill first. With an opportunity to force a hill-hill game, Kennedy missed an easy shot on the 6-ball. Pinegar capitalized and it was on to the second set. Kennedy wasted little time and jumped out to a 6-0 lead that, combined with what he called “a couple of decent rolls” and a few untimely scratches by Pinegar, led to a second-set, championship 9-3 victory for Kennedy.
