Pendley Comes Back to nab Carolina Classic Amateur Billiard Title

Adam Pendley came ffom the one-loss side to win the Great Southern Billiard Tour event at Karl's Korner.

Sixty three players started the tournament on Saturday with hopes of going home with the $1000 first place prize here at Karl’s Korner in Cayce, SC.  After everything was said and done on Sunday, young Adam Pendley of Marion, NC had potted the final 9-ball of the tournament, defeating the reigning king of the throne on the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s amateur circuit, Scott Lewis.  Tournaments here at Karl’s Korner are always exciting, and this was no exception.

Many of the south’s more well known amateur status players showed up to participate, with such heavy hitters as Jason “J-Byrd” Brown, Derek “Chew” Leonard, Brian Bagwell, Greg Dix, Jared McGee, Jason Heyward, Lewis and Pendley all wanting to prove why they should be crowned champion.  As the tournament wore on, more and more favorites fell by the wayside.  First was Derek Leonard, being eliminated in his first match on Sunday.  Next was Brian Bagwell being sent to the rail.  Eventually though, the cream rose to the top.

Lewis and McGee were set to play for the hot seat, while Pendley and Dix were playing in the one-loss bracket.  McGee had just finished a strong set against Pendley, sending him to the left side of the brackets by a score of 8-2, when he met up with Lewis.  Lewis jumped out to a quick lead of 7-2 when Jared began gaining his momentum back.  The score was 7-5 and McGee scratched on the 7-ball to hand Lewis the hotseat.

View the Karl’s Korner GSBT double elimination brackets

While this was transpiring, Dix and Pendley were involved in a war.  Neither Dix nor Pendley had been able to gain more than a one rack advantage over the other, and so, with the score knotted at 7-7, Adam stepped to the table to break.  A dry break gave the table back to Dix, who proceeded to pocket the 1 and 2 balls, however a miss on the 3 allowed Pendley to the table again.  He calmly cleaned the rest of the balls out to advance.  Dix, who took home $200 for his 4th place finish, took home an additional $500 for winning the ring game which ended early Sunday morning, edging out Dave Cook.

In the Semi-Finals, Pendley was pitted against Jared McGee once again.  This time however, the tables were turned as Pendley took advantage of 4 scratches on the break by McGee to run out an 8-3 victor.  McGee took home $350 for 3rd place.  This left the finals and another rematch for Pendley.  With a mind for redemption, and the $500 difference between 1st and 2nd,  Pendley made short work of Lewis in the first set of the true double elimination format 8-2.  The second set would prove to me much of the same, as Pendley played near flawless 9-Ball to defeat Lewis in the 2nd set and seal his first victory on the Great Southern Billiard Tour amateur circuit.

Payouts:
1st –  Adam Pendley   $1000
2nd –  Scott Lewis  500
3rd –  Jared McGee  350
4th –  Greg Dix  200
5-6th - Mike Patton  150
 Jason Brown
7-8th - John Sanders  75
 Jason Heyward
9-12th -Bud Coats  50
 Dave Cook
 Matt Mancini
 Eric Charlton
13-16th – Brian Bagwell  Free Entry
   TJ Peeples
  JR Farias
  Larry Jackson

With all the thrills of the main event taking place, a 2nd chance tournament was being run as well, with 16 players entering.  After the dust settled, TJ Peeples had defeated Roger Jeffcoat in the finals and claimed the $160 first place prize.

All of this great pool action would not have been possible without the support of the host room, Karl’s Korner, and its owner, Jeff Murrah.  The hospitality and atmosphere provided only added to the outstanding tournament which took place.  As always, enough can never be said about the tours sponsors.  The Great Southern Billiard Tour would like to thank Nick Varner Cues & Cases, Delta-13 Rack, Masters Chalk, Tiger Products, Inside POOL, AZ Billiards, Professor Q-Ball, and Billiards Digest.  The GSBT will be taking a break for the holidays, but will be back in action on January 10-11th at Diamond Billiard Club in Chattanooga, TN for a $1500 added amateur event.

The Great Southern Billiard Tour is down to the final 12 players at Karl's Korner.

When action resumed here at Karl’s Korner at 1:00 pm, there were 32 players vying for the $1000 first place prize in the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s $1500 added Carolina Classic Amateur event.   Three rounds of play later, the field has been thinned out to the final 12 players.  Notable eliminations have seen Derek “Chewy” Leonard see his tournament run come to end at the hands of Brian Timmons, 8-2 in the first round of play on Sunday. Brian Bagwell, runner up last week in Greenville, saw his tournament come to a close at the hands of John Sanders 8-5.  Many of the other favorites still remain alive in the tournament however.  Scott Lewis and Greg Dix will be playing each other on one side of the winners bracket, while a battle of the young guns is set to take place in the other winners bracket semi-final between Jared “J-Rock” Mcgee and Adam Pendley.  Matches can be watched live at: www.ustream.tv/channel/greatsouthernbilliardtour.

Early this morning at 5:00 am, the 7 man ring game finally drew to a close with Greg Dix taking top honors.  Dave Cook put up a great fight, but saw it slip away with some strong breaking and good shot making by Dix.  Greg Dix earned $500 for first, while Cook pocketed $100 for the second place finish.   Also, 16 players put $20 each to play in a 2nd chance event.  The format is a race to 7, winner break, rack your own, single elimination tournament for those who did not win cash in the main event or any league players.  The Great Southern Billiard Tour would like to thank Jeff Murrah and the staff here at Karl’s Korner for providing such a wonderful location to run an event.  Great host rooms and sponsors keep this tour alive and running smoothly.  Thanks go out to Nick Varner Cues & Cases, Delta-13 Rack, Masters Chalk, Tiger Products, Inside POOL, AZ Billiards, Professor Q-Ball, and Billiards Digest for their continued support.

After 12 hours of play on Saturday, the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s $1500 added amateur event at Kolby’s Korner in Cayce, SC has ended, leaving half the original field of 63 players left to decide the champion on Sunday.  Tournaments with an alternate break format tend to lead to some upsets, and this tournament was no exception.  During the first round of play, JR Farias met up with Boyd Bouknight.

Boyd could do no wrong in this set and steamrolled JR 8-3.  In the second round of play, Derek “Chewy” Leonard was drawn up against Matt Mancini.  Mancini was not daunted and emerged victorious 8-6 through some unforced errors from Leonard.  Chewy now has to battle through the one-loss side of the bracket to fight for the $1000 first place prize.   In third round play on the winners side, two of the pre-tournament favorites met up in Greg Dix and Jason “J-Byrd” Brown.  Dix jumped out to a commanding 6-2 lead and looked to be cruising to the hill when he missed a very makeable 7-ball.

Brown took full advantage of the mistake and one more miss by Dix to knot the score up at 6-6.  A 1-9 combo in rack 13 brought Mr. Dix to the hill, and he was able to clear out a dry break by J-Byrd in rack 14 to secure the victory.  Scott Lewis, winner of the previous two GSBT amateur events, survived a few close calls to remain undefeated coming into Sunday play with come from behind victories over Joshua Johnson, (8-7) and Larry Jackson (8-7).  In both sets he was facing at least a three rack deficit when his opponent was on the hill and was able to sink the case 9-ball first.

As play was drawing to a close, a 7 man $100 buy in ring game began.  Greg Dix, Jared Mcgee, Rick Harrison, Dave Cook, Jason Heyward, Derek “Chewy” Leonard, and Adam Pendley put up their money to play for the $500 first place prize.  Second place won their entry fee back.  As of 4:00am EST, four players still remained.  The players and their chip counts were as follows:  Greg Dix $270, Jared Mcgee $170, Dave Cook $170, Rick Harrison $100, and Derek Leonard $30 and the bet was $20 a rack per person.  Jason Heyward and Adam Pendley were both eliminated during the same rack earlier.

Sunday play begins at 1:00pm with the following one-loss bracket action: Tyler Mayfield vs. Tommy Chavis, John Sanders vs. Mike Snyder, Troy Lytle vs. TJ Peeples, Jeff Peele vs. Dave Cook, Casey Looper vs. Roger Jeffcoat, James Smith vs. JR Farias, Petri Nordling vs. Eric Charlton, and Derek Leonard vs. Brian Timmons.  Waiting in the wings in for the winners of these matches are Peanut, Wilson Mena, Jason Brown, Jeff Murrah, Tony Butler, and Larry Jackson.  Winners bracket matches begin at 3:00pm EST and feature these matches: Matt Mancini vs. Adam Pendley, Jason Heyward vs. Jared Mcgee, Scott Lewis vs. Bud Coats, and Mike Patton vs. Greg Dix.

The Great Southern Billiard Tour would like to thank it’s host room this weekend, Karl’s Korner in Cayce, SC, and it’s generous sponsors; Nick Varner Cues & Cases, Delta-13 Rack, Masters Chalk, Tiger Products, Inside POOL, AZ Billiards, Professor Q-Ball, and Billiards Digest.

Scott Lewis double-dipped Brian Bagwell at the Great Southern Billiard Tour in Greenville, SC.

Scott Lewis came into the Carolina Amateur 9-Ball Championship full of confidence after winning the last amateur event in Sanford, NC and a strong finish in the Players 10-Ball championship in Fayetteville.  He lost his first match on Saturday, however, to Brian “Hump” Bagwell in a set that he described as “brutal”.  This loss ensured that he was going to have much work to do in order to take down this event.  Nine wins and 54 player eliminations later, he found himself playing Bagwell again on the same table.  This time he made double sure that he cinched the win and the $1000 first place prize by defeating Bagwell twice in the true double elimination tournament 8-6 and 8-3.

Bagwell had came into the Sunday rounds undefeated, and continued that run by defeating Kenny Wilson (8-4), Steve Holman (8-4), and won the hot seat match over Mark Parlier 8-3.  He waited patiently in the hot seat, where Lewis defeated him.  Bagwell took home $500 for second.  Mark Parlier came into the day looking to secure victory for himself, but after defeating Marty White (8-4) and Chris Zayas (8-3), ran into Bagwell.  He waited in the one-loss side, and Scott Lewis came calling after defeating Kenny Wilson.  Parlier could not earn a re-match with Bagwell however and lost 8-3 to Lewis.  Parlier secured $220 for his 3rd place finish.  Wilson, after his defeat to Bagwell, began his move through the one-loss side by defeating Jeff Haton (8-5), Rory Dover (8-1), and Chris Zayas (8-4) before falling to Lewis 8-7 to finish fourth, taking home $150.

While the main event was winding down to its final few players, a second chance tournament was starting up for those players who were no longer in the main event.  16 players paid their entry fees in a race to 5, alternate breaks, single elimination tournament.  Jim Jennings and Josh Johnson worked their way through the brackets to meet up in the finals, with Jennings coming out on top and taking the $160 first place prize.  Johnson earned $80 for his second place finish.

The Great Southern Billiard Tour would like to thank its host room this weekend, World Cup Billiards, for hosting a great event.  All the participants expressed their appreciation for the great atmosphere and equipment they had to offer.  All of these events would not be possible without the support of sponsors; Nick Varner Cues & Cases, Delta-13 Rack, Masters Chalk, Tiger Products, Inside POOL, AZ Billiards, Professor Q-Ball, and Billiards Digest.  Next weekend, the GSBT takes a trip to Karls Korner in Cayce, SC for another $1500 added Amateur event.

Daulton Shines at Great Southern Billiard Tour

Daulton (left) defeated Jonathan Pinegar in the finals of the 10-Ball division at the Great Southern Billiard Tour Championship.

After a week of intense competition the Great Southern Billiard Tour Players Championships at King Street Billiards in Fayetteville, NC came to a climatic conclusion.  Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton, tournament promoter for the GSTB, claimed tonight what he said was, “among the greatest and overall best win I ever got!”, by winning the 10-ball division against undefeated  John “Hennessee” Pinegar 10-4. In the one-pocket division, tournament favorite, Gabe Owen, remained undefeated against BCA and one-pocket Hall of Famer Nick Varner in the semi-finals and finals.

Coming into the afternoon semi-final matches, the question on everyone’s mind was whether or not Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant the only player left in both divisions would be able to claim both titles. Charlie played match after match from noon until the early Monday morning without a break. The grind of playing continous matches of different skill sets finally caught up to him, when he lost to Shannon Daulton 9-7. Charlie began dominating the set with a 6-2 lead, but could not hold on when Shannon seized the momentum and tied the game 6-6. Shannon, after losing to Jonathan “Hennessee” Pinegar in a match he felt he shot sub par, proved to himself and everyone that he had not lost his touch as a player, and earned the re-match.

Nick Varner proved why he is a one-pocket hall of famer by losing to only Gabe Owen in the entire one-pocket dlivision. At the end of the tournament Varner admitted that after losing in the winner’s side semi finals to Owen he was hoping for at least one win in the finals. Gabe showed cool and confident demeanor throughout the week and after winning the title dedicated it to his recently cancer diagnosed step-father. It demonstrated that his motivation in the tournament was not only a claim to fame but a sincere and heartfelt drive.

Shannon and Gabe were not the only winners tonight. Charlie emerged victorious tonight although he was not in either division final. Shannon Daulton proclaimed that he showed endless determination and grit by claiming 3rd place in both divisions and awarded him on the spot a promise for an “Overall Iron Man” Championship.  Overall the Tournament proved to be a great success thanks to the help of King Street Billiards for donating not only $25,000 to the prize fund but their time and workers as well.  The Tournament would not be possible also without Nick Varner Cues and Cases, Master Chalk,  Tiger Products, Delta 13 rack, and Professor Q Ball. We look forward to the next event  and ask you to check back on our site for more updates.

Final Day of Great Southern Billiard Tour Continues

Bryant continues in both events at the Great Southern Billiard Tour Players Championship.

Bryant continues in both events at the Great Southern Billiard Tour Player's Championship.

The last day at the Great Southern Billiard Tour Player Championships in Fayettville, NC started with just 4 players left in both the 10-Ball and one-pocket division. Charlie Bryant has exemplified a mastery of both divisions by be the only player to be left in both Tournaments.

Leonardo Andam, although quite a determined and knowledgeable one-pocket player, could not match Tony Chohan’s eagerness to stay alive in the tournament. This was made apparent when Chohan set the record for the shortest one-pocket match we’ve seen in this tournament yet. His match against Leonardo Andam in the one-loss side of the one-pocket bracket took less than 20 minuntes, contrary to the Mike Davis, Nick Varner match we saw yesterday that took well over 4 hrs. Tony played very offensively and was able to make the 8 out every time he approached the table shutting out Andam 4-0.

The other match on the one-loss bracket of the one-pocket division was with 19 year old John “bet some” Morra against Detroit’s own Adam Smith. Morra played a near flawless game with some very impressive bank shots securing his position in the next round and beating Smith 4-2. Morra advanced to play and defeat underdog Barry Rogers 4-1, who had just lost to Nick Varner 4-1 on the winner’s side of the bracket. Nick Varner, advanced to play match favorite Gabe Owen in the one-pocket division.

Owen proved why he is a favorite but shutting out one-pocket legend Nick Varner 4-0, then continued to proclaim his dominance by beating Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant” for the hot seat 4-1.  Hillbilly, the only player in both the 10-Ball and one-pocket division proceded to make his way closer to the finals by beating Morra 4-2. Hillbilly now awaits to play BCA Hall of Famer Nick Varner for a chance to play in the finals against undefeated Gabe Owen.

10-ball had its share of exciting moments when we saw Jonathan “Hennessee” Pinegar defeat Shannon Daulton for the hot seat in a close match of 9-6. Charlie Bryant in a fast paced match against former US Open 9-ball champion Shane Van Boening assured the crowd that he is a hungry dominant force in both these tournaments. Charlie beat Shane against a newly instated 30 second shot clock 9-3.

Will Hillbilly be in these two nail biting finals? Check back later today for the exciting conclusion of Great Southern Billiard Tour Player Championships.
