In the final eight on the winners’ side, Deuel matched up with former Player of the Year Shane Van Boening. The two players fought to double-hill before Deuel was sent west 8-7. Van Boening went on to face off against “Iron Mike” Davis, who had just delivered Mike Dechaine to the one-loss side after their hill-hill match. Yet another hill-hill match ensued, and it was Van Boening who advanced to the hot seat match while Davis was sent left 8-7.

Meeting Van Boening in the hot seat match was Rodney Morris. “Rocket” not been challenged as yet that day, delivering defeats to Mario Cruz 8-2 and then Tommy Kennedy 8-3. But his hot seat match with Van Boening went, as so many other matches had, double-hill, but ultimately it was the Hawaiian who stayed unseated.

Once on the west side of the chart, Deuel had an uphill battle to face. He started off with Florida’s Hunter Lombardo, eliminating him 8-5, and then went on to Dustin Morris, to whom he delivered a donut 8-0. Deuel then ousted Kennedy at fifth place with an 8-5 victory and went on to the quarterfinals.

There he matched up with Davis, who had just won yet another hill-hill match, this time against Jerry Calderon 8-7. Davis must have been spent, for Deuel swiftly put an end to his run 8-1 to advance to the semifinals. The recently defeated Van Boening, who was responsible for Deuel’s sole loss in this event, was Deuel’s opponent. It was a hotly contested battle of the big guns, but Deuel wreaked revenge to win 8-7. In the finals against Morris, Deuel had an easier time of things. The two traded the first four racks, but after that Deuel dominated the match to earn the win 9-2, winning his first Seminole Pro Tour title of the season.

Shane Van Boening went undefeated through the 64-player field at the Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open to take first place, defeating Charlie Williams in the final set for the title. The event was held at the Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, GA, July 10-12, and boasted an $11, 500-added prize purse.

After his unchallenged run through the winners’ bracket, including strong victories over James Roberts 9-1, Donny Mills 9-2, and Williams 9-2, Van Boening went up against Maine’s Mike Dechaine in the hot seat match. Dechaine had vanquished tough opponents such as Johnny Archer 9-6 and Adam Smith 9-8 before reaching the hot seat match. However, Van Boening handled Dechaine easily, sending him to the one-loss side 9-4 to await his finals opponent.

Williams was fighting through the west side after his defeat by Van Boening, sending Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie home in fifth with a 9-5 defeat and going on to face Smith in the quarterfinals. Smith had just ousted Corey Deuel 9-4. An epic hill-hill battle saw Williams move on to the semifinals, where Dechaine awaited him. Another double-hill bout ensued, and again it was Williams who moved on, moving back to the right side of the chart to try to revenge his loss to Van Boening.

However, in the final match Williams was outmatched in his opponent. Van Boening took an early 4-1 lead and, with his massive break, managed to outplay Williams at every opportunity. It wasn’t too long before Van Boening won his first Seminole Pro Tour title of the season 11-3.

Shane Van Boening is leading the pack at the Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open, which has wound down to its final 6 players from the full 64-player field they began with two days ago.

Van Boening’s closest match was in the first round against Darin Brewer, whom he defeated 9-6. Since then he has been demolishing opponents, only giving up eight games in the last four rounds. After his 9-1 trouncing of James Roberts Saturday evening, he went on to knock Donny Mills into the one-loss side 9-2 and then sent Charlie Williams to follow 9-3.

In the hot seat Van Boening will face Mike Dechaine. Dechaine’s road has more speedbumps than has Van Boening’s—two of his last three matches have gone double-hill. His last match of the evening Saturday saw him best Rod Rentz 9-8, and then in Sunday’s first round he had to face Hall of Famer Johnny Archer, whom he defeated 9-6. A hill-hill nail-biter over Adam Smith put Dechaine in the hot seat match against Van Boening.

Smith is still alive, though, and will face off against Corey Deuel in the next round. Deuel recently eliminated Mills 9-5 and James Baraks 9-6. In the other one-loss side match, Williams will play Wilkie, whom narrowly escaped a hill-hill match with Archer in the previous round.

Winner of the Seminole Pro Tour’s last stop, which was held in Spring Hill, FL, last month, Donny Mills is looking to repeat at the stop this weekend. Hosted by Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, GA, the Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open has winnowed its winners’ bracket to eight players, while the one-loss side is still fighting it out.

After two easy wins in the first couple of rounds over Eddie Little and Jeff Crawford, both 9-2, Mills went on to face regular tour player and occasional victor, Stevie Moore. In no time Mills reached a 5-0 lead and looked like he would sweep the match, but Moore fought back to knot the score at 5 apiece. From there Mills took two games for every one of Moore’s, with the final score at 9-7 Mills. Mills’ next challenge will come from Shane Van Boening, who bested James Roberts 9-1.

Hall of Famer Nick Varner was sent west 9-5 in the last winners’ side round by Adam Smith, who will go on to face Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie, just off a hill-hill thriller with Paul Song, in the next round. Mike Dechaine survived another hill-hill battle with Rod Rentz and next plays Johnny Archer, who earlier defeated John Brumback 9-2. James Baraks dealt Tommy Kennedy his first loss 9-4 and next plays Charlie Williams, who sent Sylver Ochoa to the one-loss side 9-4.

by InsidePOOL Staff

“Rocket” Rodney Morris claimed the Memorial Weekend stop of the Seminole Pro Tour, besting the undefeated Corey Deuel in the finals to take first place. The $8,500-added event was hosted by Hollywood Billiards in Hollywood, CA, and attracted a 59-player, star-studded field.

Morris suffered a late, hill-hill loss in the event to Gabe Owen in the winners’ side final eight and was sent to the west side. Owen continued on to face Deuel, who delivered a sound 8-2 defeat to “The Babe” and then progressed to the hot seat match against Rafael Martinez, who had just bested Stevie Moore 8-5. It was as close as it could be, but Deuel ended up sending Martinez to the one-loss side with an 8-7 victory.

On the west side, Morris faced off against house pro Max Eberle and eliminated him 8-3. Another close call saw him edge past Florida’s Hunter Lombardo 8-7 to drub Moore 8-1. Owen, now on the west side, fought a tight match against local hero Oscar “The Big O” Dominguez and narrowly escape 8-6 to reach the quarterfinals. It was Morris versus Owen again, but this time with different results: Morris took two racks for every one of Owen’s and advanced 8-4.
