Morra Defeats Van Boening for Derby City Banks Title
What started with 404 pool players reduced to one player Monday night at the Horseshoe Casino in Elizabeth, IN. Canadian John Morra defeated Shane Van Boening in a two-set final that kept the crowd mesmerized.
The day started with several dozen players left in the bank pool division of the Derby City Classic. After a few rounds there were three remaining players; John Morra, Brandon Shuff and Shane Van Boening. The draw allowed John Morra, who was undefeated at the time, to advance to the finals while Van Boening and Shuff played for their right to advance. After a hard-fought battle, Van Boening advanced to meet Morra.
The first set of the finals was a display in banking by both players, with Van Boening getting the win. The second set saw a good start from Morra and a mistake by Van Boening that will haunt him for some time. Van Boening called a 4-rail bank but made the shot 2 rails. After he moved several balls to claim victory, his mistake was noticed and he was charged with a loss, giving Morra a 2-0 lead. Van Boening fought back, but Morra persevered to take home the win and the title.

Future of Seminole Pro Tour

Future of Seminole Pro Tour
The Seminole Pro Tour would like to thank all of the fans, players, room owners and especially sponsors who have supported the tour through the past five years that the tour has been in existence. It is with great sorrow and lament that the Seminole Tour will not have a season in 2012 and will continue to suspend operations indefinitely.
From its small beginnings as a regional tour in South Florida, to its growth as the premier national 10-ball tour in the country, the Seminole Pro Tour has always strived to put the player’s and fan’s interest first. The operations were not “Munsoned”, but rather an executive decision to suspend operations was made. The amount of support that the Tour has had has been overwhelming. The countless correspondence that has been received expressing their support for the Tour has not gone unnoticed. The Seminole Pro Tour and the Seminole Tribe would like to say, “Sho-naa-bish (thank you).”

From its small beginnings as a regional tour in South Florida, to its growth as the premier national 10-ball tour in the country, the Seminole Pro Tour has always strived to put the player’s and fan’s interest first. The operations were not "Munsoned", but rather an executive decision to suspend operations was made.
The Tour would especially like to thank a few people specifically. John DiToro, the creator of the original Seminole Pro Tour, is not only one of the best tour directors, but also a wonderful person. It was his vision and dedication that got the Seminole Pro Tour to the heights of the industry. John is a true professional and his work ethic is second to none. Thank you, John.
The Seminole Tribe had the pleasure to sponsor a couple of players. Corey Deuel, the Prince of Pool, was a true cornerstone to the betterment of the Tour’s operations. Corey’s professionalism and true love of the game helped the Tour grow leaps and bounds. If not for Corey, the Tour would have never been able to reach the levels that it did. Thank you, Corey.
The many sponsors and room owners that helped make the Tour possible are another group of people that were essential to the Tour’s operations. Without dedicated room owners and sponsors, the Tour would have never been able to reach the number of fans all over the country and the world. One room owner who stood by the Tour through thick and thin has been Rocky McElroy. No matter what the situation, The Tour could always count on Rocky to be there with his support and the support of his pool room, Capone’s. Thank you to all the sponsors, room owners and Rocky.
The Tour could not have grown without all of the great players that have honored the Tour by playing in the tournaments. The Seminole Pro Tour was unique in that it allowed average players to play alongside of World Champions. The Tour has seen several great matches and players in each tournament. If the great players would have never supported the Tour, there would have never been a national Tour. Thank you to all players who played in the tournaments.
The Tour would like to thank all of the staff and workers who dedicated themselves and sacrificed their time to make sure the Tour ran as smoothly as possible. Gerry Mayen, Tiffany Marquez, Kevin Pickard, Brenda Mello, Bobby Frank, OB Osceola and Elrod Bowers all had their mark on the operations of the Tour. Without their hard work in the office and on the road, the Tour would not have been so successful. Thank you, Seminole Pro Tour staff.
Lastly, the tour would like to thank all of the fans who supported the Tour. So many great fans came to see the events all over the country and thousands more watched online through our web streams. The fans are who the Tour was created for and their unconditional support is appreciated. Thank you, fans.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida has decided to pursue other operations within the Tribe and therefore will not be considering any further pool-related ventures at this time. The Seminoleprotour.com website will remain running so the final inventory of merchandise can be sold with extremely reduced prices.

Pagulayan and Van Boening: Undefeated omens of things to come

Pagulayan and Van Boening: Undefeated omens of things to come
by Paul Berg
The Horseshoe Casino has some fantastic selections in the restaurant category. Legends provides a wide range of cuisine, while Pearl samples the Pacific Rim. Jack Binion’s notorious namesake graces the Steak House, renowned cook Paula Deen has a buffet, and Graeter’s Ice Cream can comfort a weary mind any time. Right near the hotel desk the Aroma Cafe & Bar provides a proper olfactory wakeup call, and for the grazing herd of billiards beasts, that hour can strike at any time. With a thunderstorm watch and a rescinded tornado warning, and the Sherman Minton bridge out, getting here from the old Executive West site of the Derby City Classic could provide a challenge for northbound travelers. Sureman Cues is a stop on the shopping buffet for those looking to take their shots with a stroke on the pool table rather than the dazzling array of slot machines, card tables and dice tumbling havens.
“I worked so hard to prepare for this and two days before it I got sick,” south side Indianapolis’ Brian Gregg reported as the last matches of the seventh round of the 9-Ball Banks division came to a close. Gregg and Tony Coleman also went after the ring game cash on Friday night, but the native son and disciple of Bugs Rucker had a view from the rail and expressed the contrast in scenery since Diamond’s amazing pool party changed venues. “I liked the Executive West [in nearby Louisville, KY], but I like it here because it’s cleaner and has better food.” A staunch field of 404 bankers at the outset has been whittled down to 27 with seven rounds of play complete, with many on their last barrel in the buyback format. Meanwhile, One-Pocket kicked off with 312 players, a surprise being Cliff Joyner’s opening loss to Warren Kiamco, a solid Filipino with plenty of seasoning.

Many fine players were eliminated from the 36th U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships Friday, with only the top 6 returning Saturday to collect their piece of the $175,000 prize purse.
Some big guns are still fully loaded. Defending All-Around champion Shane Van Boening remains undefeated and will face Francisco Bustamante tomorrow as the eighth round kicks off at 10 AM CST today. Earl Strickland took his first loss at the end of the night, as Gregg commented aptly that he’s “got the extension ladder on his stick.” He’ll have to face a confident and able Glenn “Piggy Banks” Rogers next, one of Chicago’s best bets in a game that is effectively native to this region. Ralf Souquet bucked the odds against KY’s John Brumback with a 5-2 victory on the hill, leaving both men without a loss to spare. “The Surgeon” will have to tackle undefeated Truman Hogue next, as the pint-sized Louisville dynamo ended the awesome start for Brandon Shuff.
“I’ve only lost one rack so far out of six matches,” Shuff said before running into Hogue. The Maryland man will have to tackle a new kind of Tennessee bear in Johnathan Pinegar, who remains undefeated after an outstanding clash with five-time All-Around champ Efren “The Magician” Reyes. Efren played an effectively flawless first rack, but “Hennessee” was not to be outdone. While Reyes smiled away early mistakes and Pinegar groused with the official, the American resolve took hold. The Filipino shot-making and defensive tactics were overcome with determination as Pinegar took the match 3 games to 1.
Reyes will have to face outstanding Derby performer Jason Miller next, who earned an impressive victory over the sharp shooting Texan Sylver Ochoa. His break bore fruit in the final game, but Miller needed to get the ball back to put together a stinging run of four banks and closed the difficult final ball deal under the hot lights of the Accustats table after a few near makes for a 5-0 win to cap a 3-1 triumph with impressive alacrity.

Early Results at Derby City Classic Delivers the Goods
Posted by admin as Billiard News, Players
by Paul Berg
If you missed the live Inside POOL free live HD stream, free lessons aren’t your thing. However, if you were at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino for Friday and Saturday’s action at the 14th Annual Derby City Classic, you missed the chance for many more. Some odd threats of weather conditions made it tough to get from Louisville, KY to Elizabeth, IN at the outset, yet all the animals in the zoo of the wild pocket billiards world are represented, and the hospitality couldn’t be sweeter.
Whether it was the pink 4 ball from the Accustats crew’s view of the Diamond under the hot lights of table one, or an Aramith purple scattered across two luxurious floors with 34 more tournament tables and plenty of legendary signs leading to more secret sections of the jungle, the start to the grueling grind set the cold night on fire in the 9-Ball Banks division. Straight pool has a magical 14.1 brew fermenting, while the firmaments will open to the beasts of One Pocket and rotation’s little brother 9-Ball soon enough. While the sprawling first round of the three jeweled crown of the main events carried on it’s first round on the players’ first barrel of a buy-back structure that allows two chances in each discipline, the great ring game tradition caught the galleries attention.
Scott Frost was the big winner out of six capable bank pool players, and your egotistical narrator mustered up an interview earlier in the night to encapsulate what he was unable to witness first hand. The rail was buzzing after sunrise about their favorite ousting some local sons, as “The Freezer” let go of his defensive mindset after a tough start to the tournament. I caught up to him after a victory on his rebuy that was as impressive to me against the noise as the big dollar score was to the crowd the night before.

Frost was the big winner out of six capable bank players, and your egotistical narrator mustered up an interview earlier in the night to encapsulate what he was unable to witness first hand.
“I was jet-lagged; played my first match against Dennis Orcollo. He beat me 3-0. I had plenty of shots, but that table …” Frost didn’t trail off as we discussed the battle with his manager Larry Schwartz, but the conditions can be explained quickly. The lights for television cause a drying process on the cloth and sweat for birds, dogs and cats of any kind. The pressure is amplified in many ways in a world where the camera is pervasive and the level of scrutiny is intense. “Larry talked me into playing the ring game. I’m late for the ring game, don’t even want to play.” Confidence is a must in this shooting game, but with an opening 2 ball cross side, you get some bang for your buck. “After that everything changed.”
A rock rolling down a mountain with a snow covered ease comes over Frost often. “A locomotive,” Schwartz declared him, describing how easy shots and positions sometimes materialize in a game where defense is often a liability to execution. Another of Schwartz’s promising whipper-snappers is “poker player” Chris Gentile, while the Kentucky captain John Brumback, one of its native sons Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton, and “under-rated” Troy Jones were in the field as well. Once Jones got down to man to man battle with Frost, fan support and dominance carried him to the winner take-all prize.
The morning brought education in many forms. While it’s easy to get a game with Efren “Bata” Reyes cheaply as Columbia, SC’s Kevin Brown found out to great amusement, what was going on in the New Orleans room was a stronger dose of medicine. Grady Mathews and Danny Diliberto taught new wave thought on old defensive ideas without a break shot in straight pool, followed by Brumback (with a little help from Freddie Bentivegna, who wears great names like Bugs and Taylor on his sleeves and heart) recreating an outstanding video lesson on secrets of banking without spin, as many of the Filipino masters have seeped those arts out of the game. Over in front of the IP’s live stream from the Harrison room, things happen faster but with less credit to forefathers. A mingling of the two can result in young pool devotees like little five month old Gibson having an easy time entering a man’s game. Clyde Ellis Read more ...
